Frequently asked Tanning Questions
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SPRAY TANNING?
In 2017 alone, an estimated: 7,200 Canadians were diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer and 1,250 Canadians died from melanoma skin cancer. If that is not a wake up call for you I am not too sure what more to say. Tanning via the sun or tanning beds causes damages to the skin, leading up to premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmented spots and potentially skin cancer. You have made the safe choice by deciding to sunless tan. You can have a beautiful bronze glow and take care of your skin as you can never get your skin back! For more information on skin cancer, please go to www.skincancer.org. Sunless tans provide no protection from UV rays. Please wear a your sunscreen every day.
WILL A SPRAY TAN RUIN LIGHT CLOTHING SUCH AS A WEDDING DRESS?
No, the tan will not ruin any light clothing but ensure that you have the tan applied the day or two before you intend to wear any light coloured clothing. Also remember to shower twice to ensure that all the bronzer has washed off.
WILL A SPRAY TAN CAUSE FRECKLES IN PEOPLE WHO USUALLY FRECKLE WHEN TANNING?
No. There is nothing in the tanning solution that will cause more freckles to break out. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become less pronounced because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color differentiation between the blemishes and the rest of the skin.
ARE SPRAY TAN SOLUTION SAFE TO USE?
All our spray tanning solution have been extensively tested and is very safe and all skin types. The solution we use has less than 13 ingredients with these key features:
ECOCERT Certified DHA, highest quality (organic)
HOW DOES A SPRAY TAN WORK?
The ingredient that tans your skin is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that interacts with dead skin cells to create the tanned color. The DHA causes a chemical reaction with the proteins in the outer most layers of the skin, which causes the color of the skin to change, producing a beautiful natural tan. A spray tan does not dye the skin; the immediate color you see when your tan is applied is a color guide or bronzer that helps the technician not miss any sections and allows you to instantly see your tan. The DHA starts to react with the skin within 1 hours of the tan application and continues to do so for a total of 8 hours.
A spray gun is used to spray a combination of air and tanning solution directly onto the skin, which dries almost immediately. In less than 30 minutes with custom spraying you can have a flawless tan that will develop over the next 8 hours.
WILL A SPRAY TAN TURN ME ORANGE?
Spray tans are super depended on the technician. A great formulated solution can turn into a nightmare if not applied properly. If the level of DHA in the mist is too much, your skin may become super-saturated and turn orange, on the other end, if the DHA is not enough; your skin will not tan. Another way your skin can turn orange if the proper colour base is not applied to your skin. Or if your spray tan technician is using too high of setting on their gun.
When choosing a spray tan artist inquire if they do colour blending to ensure your given the correct solution for your skin type.
HOW LONG DO SPRAY TANS LAST? HOW DO I MAKE MY SPRAY TAN LAST LONGER?
How long do spray tans last? 5 to 10 days. According to research, humans shed their dead skin at the rate of 0.001 – 0.003 ounces of skin flakes every hour. So for spray tan artists to suggest that spray tans can last up to 15 days is incorrect unless their referring to “build up”.
But how can we to get our spray tans to last longer? It is a common question asked in the spray tan room. The first step to prolonging a perfect flawless spray tan is too accept that most likely you have been doing things wrong. But that is okay cause I am here to help you figure this out and prevent it!
The first step to achieving receiving the most out of your tan is to understand the process of a spray tan first. While it might seem like some amazing magical illusion, there actually is a bio chemical reaction happening between DHA and the protein and amino acids found in your dead skin cell layer also know as the “epidermis”
DHA for those unaware is also referred to as “dihydroxyacetone” is the main ingredient found in a spray tan. DHA interacts and acts as an active ingredient that turns your dead skin cells brown! As you already know, the colour is only temporary, unfortunately! That reason is because unlike UV rays that come from the sun which also damage and harm your skin, DHA only affects the topmost outer layer of your skin. Keep in mind, that DHA also referred to as Dihydroxyacetone is 100% safe when applied to the skin and also vegan, organic and all natural.
What all this means is that your spray tan you receive from your spray tan professional will only last as long as that top layer of skin, which is completely and 100% determined by your own personal skin cycle.
While everyone’s skin cycle is as unique as they are, there are still proven ways to lengthen the time between skin cell birth and death.
BEFORE YOUR SPRAY TAN:
Even when you’re not spray tanning exfoliation is always an amazing idea to promote healthy skin. But it’s an even more amazing idea when you are frequently or first time spray tanning. Exfoliating removes unwanted residue from soap that could work as a barrier towards your spray tan. It also removes shampoos, fragrances or anything that can affect or alter your PH levels found in your skin. Exfoliating also cleans your pores and removes old skin brining you to a clean slate which is perfect and necessary for spray tans. The reality is the fresher your skin is the longer your tan will last before it begins to fade. Exfoliating also removes old spray tan residue and build up so is extremely important if your a “frequent tanner” By exfoliating properly you can extend the life of your tan by up to three days!
PH Balancing Sprays, Prep sprays, Barrier creams
WARNING: It is important to always avoid PH Balancing Sprays and to avoid Prep sprays and never use Barrier creams. A lot of spray tan artists, salon owners and companies will try to up sell clients on all of these above products making you believe it is vital. But truthfully it is just a cash grab and actually will negatively impact your tan. Anything that is sprayed or applied to your skin prior to your spray tan service can create a barrier between you and the solution. This barrier means that the tanning solution won’t efficiently or effectively adhere to your skin as it should resulting into a faster fade out. This can also create a blotchy or patchy tan where the DHA didn’t activate properly. The honest and sad truth and facts is that those products are just another way for the companies that produce them to make money.
If shaving before a spray tan service It is okay to shave the morning of your spray tan, but only if the service is still a few hours away, and only if you have time to exfoliate your skin afterwards. The reason these requirements are in place is because shaving opens up the skins pores, and shaving cream can leave a residue on your skin. Both these things can negatively impact your spray tan’s life expectancy and result. If you absolutely must shave right before your tan, do so with lukewarm water, a brand new razor, and an oil-free shaving cream; the results won’t be perfect, but they’ll be better than the alternative!
For pretty obvious reasons, skin peeling from sun burns can destroy a spray tan. In fact, the results are often so unpredictable and terrible that most professional spray tan artist will refuse to spray you if you’ve been recently burned, and in my opinion should! The reason for this is easy: a sun burn will cause your skin to shed off in huge patches, resulting in a horribly uneven tan that will disappear the moment your skin peels off. Whats my best advice? Wait until after your skin has totally recovered from your sun burn before booking your next spray tan. And always wear sunscreen to avoid getting the burn in the first place.
AFTER YOUR SPRAY TAN
Solution with Alcohol
Solutions are often blended with alcohol unless your using water based spray tan solutions. The idea behind using alcohol is that the alcohol will act as a fast acting drying agent to avoid the stickiness and tackiness you get off oil-based spray tan solutions. Unfortunately this comes at a price. Just as the alcohol is drying out your tan, it is also drying out your skin. Drier skin is proven to have a much higher turnover rate than moisturized skin, so alcohol will actually be causing your tan to fade faster. There are ways around this, 1) would be to use a water based spray tan solution as it is hydrating for the skin and has a longer lasting result. Or using moisturizing far more frequently than you normally would!
Tight clothing after the service
Everyone loves wearing tights or skinny jeans, but when it comes to a fresh spray tan, that is a huge “No No”. If your a frequent tanner you probably have noticed before some of your spray tan rubbing off on clothing. You may think that this is just the bronzers rubbing off, but with oil-based solutions this is also a strong indication that you are losing DHA as well! The less DHA you have on your skin, the lighter your tan is going to develop and the sooner you’re going to be booking another appointment with your local spray tan studio. What are the alternatives? Wear dark loose clothing to leave with after your appointment, or avoid oil based tanning solutions all together!
Rinsing off too early
The most detrimental thing you can do to your spray tan is wash it off too early, before the DHA has had a chance to work its magic. This will result in you completely losing your tan. Now, always remember: most “traditional” spray tan solutions require a full 8-12 hours to develop. There are express spray tanning solutions on the market that do allow you to shower after 3 hours. Check out our work out ready solution or new york minute express for more info. which means you can leave the solution on for as little as 60 minutes in some cases. However in some cases the tan still will take 8-12 hours to develop so don’t freak out when using express tanning solutions.
Using products that harm/negatively affect a spray tan
Maintaining your skin’s health with different beauty products is always a good idea, but when it comes to your spray tan there are a surprising number of products that can actually harm your tan! There are too many to go into on this page however it is a good rule of thumb to purchase beauty products that have been specifically tested for use with spray tanning when trying to extend that spray than. I recommend finding simple and gentle soaps, shampoos, and scrubs that have the fewest ingredients possible: the fewer the ingredients, the less likely it is to react negatively with your tan!
If you aren’t moisturizing on the days following your spray tan appointment then you are setting yourself up for failure. Moisturizing will ensure that your skin stays healthy and hydrated. Which consequently means that your skin will turn over slower. The more you moisturize, the longer your tan will last.
Ocean water/Chlorine/Excessive sweating
Chlorine and salt water really does a number on your skin. Likewise, dumping a bunch of bleach and salt on your spray tan is naturally going to have a major impact. The best way to fight against this if your on vacation and don’t want to ruin your tan is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! After you work out, after you go for a swim, or any other activity that gets salt, dirt, or grime on your body: rinse the chlorine or salt, or whatever it is that you got into, off of your body and then make sure to apply your favorite moisturizer so that your tan doesn’t suffer from your active lifestyle!
CAN I GET A SPRAY TAN EVERY WEEK?
We recommend every other week. We say every other week because, your tan will last longer than a week and we prefer you to be scrubbed clean before applying another tan. This just guarantees flawless results! However you are most definitely able to do a spray tan every week it will not be harmful for your skin in any way.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT TO SHOWER?
You wait 8-10 hours before showering post spraying. You will become darker and darker throughout the process. This is totally normal and will wash off in the shower, leaving your flawless airbrush finish. Don’t forget to pat dry and NO exfoliating.
HOW LONG AFTER MY SPRAY TAN MUST I WAIT BEFORE WORKING OUT?
At least 8-12 hours, we suggest washing off the cosmetic bronzer prior to doing any type of sweating.
HOW QUICKLY CAN I GET DRESSED AFTER A SPRAY TANNING SESSION?
Once you’ve “fan” dried for approx. 5 minutes, there’s little chance of any bronzer or DHA getting on your clothes. If you perspire soon after your spray tanning session, some of the bronzer may transfer to your clothing. Since the bronzer is completely water-soluble, it will wash out.
DO SPRAY TANNING SOLUTIONS HAVE ANY SMELL AFTER CONTACT WITH MY SKIN?
Some people notice a slight starchy smell on their skin a few hours after a tanning session. This is simply the DHA reacting to proteins in your skin and it fades away fairly quickly.
WILL SWIMMING AFFECT MY SPRAY TAN?
Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the effects of your Spray Tan results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.
SPRAY TANNING VS. SPRAY BOOTHS?
Whatever your body size or height, a spray booth will spray you with the exact same motion and amount of spray.
The amount of spray can be adjusted and tailored to your body type and for your needs, creating a more flawless and customized result.
- Spray Tanning is much more accurate than booth sprays
- Spray Tanning can be done in the comfort of your home
- What booth does in 30-60 seconds, Spray tanning is between 10-15 minutes.
- Precision application of the solution evenly across your body ensuring the best results.
- Spray Tanning is also cleaner than booth sprays.
- Spray Tanning tends to last longer.
- Barrier creams are not necessary
- No head caps or booties are needed
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY SPRAY TAN SESSION?
Most people wear nothing. However, if you’d be more comfortable wearing a bathing suit or underwear, be aware that the tanning solution may stain it but is water-soluble and should wash out. (we recommend wearing at least bottoms such as a thong, and men must wear either underwear or boxers)
